Blackness, Bars, and the Monolith in the Room
De Bevin Biggers

Disdain.
The route my verbal exchanges typically go in, are blatantly negative, when is comes to my "black bar" experience in Houston. Of course, it is not in my desire to have such a defeatism view point, but let's be real, really real. Most of my experiences feel like Houston influencers, owners, and play makers see blackness as a monolith. Where is the art in creating, conceptual ideas that keep you on your toes? Non existent. The Monolith is in the room, huge and hovering over the money hungry, clout chasing, bravado that isn't even up to par to actual black culture. I am just a spectator though. Maybe my eyes have seen too many beautiful black spaces and maybe I feel like I shouldn't have to travel outside of my city to experiences those things. We are one of the largest cities in America.
Blackness, is not inflexible. Blackness is everything.
Houston is hugest and smallest community ever. Ever felt like you continuously see the same faces? You do you typical turn up routine? I know you have.
In search of my space.
